Prof. Snell has been active in both discipline-based research and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has published papers on organizational learning and business ethics in various journals. During the last decade at Lingnan, he has incorporated Service-Learning into four different academic courses and served for a time as Director of Service-Learning.

How to foster service leadership attributes through Service-Learning

Abstract
Beginning in 2012, Service Leadership has been introduced as a general education or extra-curricular subject in all UGC-funded universities, initially supported by funding from the Fung Foundation, and inspired by the ideas of Po Chung, now Chairman Emeritus of DHL.
Robin Snell, Professor of Department of Management in Lingnan University, will explain the concept of service leadership as a set of attributes that relate to personal and interpersonal competence, character and care. Service leadership attributes can be acquired through guidance, practice and reflection, and in today’s post-industrial economy, everyone can learn to be a service leader at work, as well as in everyday life.
Prof. Snell will also explain how he uses Service-Learning as an educational platform for enabling and empowering students to practice their service leadership attributes on two different courses. The first of these is a general education course on Service Leadership, the second is a capstone course for BBA students on Strategic Management. He will also share his experience in teaching the Lingnan’s Service Leadership Practicum course, which is built around 8 week-long placements in community organizations during the summer.
The workshop will discuss related issues, such as how to arrange, design and monitor a service-learning practicum as an opportunity for students to practice and reflect on their service leadership attributes, whether in the context of a course exclusively about service leadership, or for courses that encompass other subject matter. After the workshop, participants will know more about how they could help students to develop their service leadership attributes through undertaking Service-Learning projects on participants' own courses.
CoP-SLHE is one of the initiatives of an UGC-funded project, "Cross-institutional Capacity Building for Service-Learning in Hong Kong Higher Education Institutions (Project No.: PolyU4/T&L/16-19) jointly organised by Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Education University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Our goal is to facilitate sharing of experiences among SL practitioners and interested staff from all UGC-funded institutions and to promote collective learning and the scholarship of teaching and learning in Service-Learning.
