From Hong Kong to Taiwan: Non-Local Service-Learning Project in "News Writing" via Zoom Video Conferencing

Abstract

Dr. Siu Yan Ho, Lecturer from the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University, will share his experiences with his students in a Service-Learning study tour to Taiwan – “Service in Hong Kong, Learning in Taiwan: Exploration of the Community, Historical Reconstruction and Cultural Comparison”. This project aims to widen students’ horizons and to allow them to observe and experience the living, historical and cultural environment in Taiwan through learning activities, community service and narrative of local history by the Taiwanese, in order to continue and extend service-learning and compare the differences between Hong Kong and Taiwan.   Dr. Siu will share about how to implement this project from the preparation stage and the challenges he faced. From the learning side, he will also share about the students’ understandings toward social issues from humanistic perspectives, and the knowledge of Service-Learning they learnt in Taiwan, including visiting the “Silver Hair’s Lodge”, interviewing an elderly wood-carver, and investigating developments of Salt Fields.

Dr. Siu Yan Ho is the lecturer of the Department of Chinese in Lingnan University, concentrating on linguistics, dietary literature and cultural studies. Dr. Siu is the founder of “Dr.Siu Cultural Studio”(蕭博士文化工作室) and is one of the members in the management committee of Yan Oi Tong Chan Wong Suk Fong Memorial Secondary School. His recent publications include the book “Monograph on Hong Kong Dietetics and Cultural Studies”(《解構滋味:香港飲食文學與文化研究論集》) and the edited book “Service in Hong Kong, Learning in Taiwan: Exploration of the Community, Historical Reconstruction and Cultural Comparison”(《服務研習在港臺:社區探索、歷史重構、文化對照》, will be published in 2020). Dr. Siu was the assistant director of two literary films - "Yi-Chang Liu: 1918" (《劉以鬯: 1918》)and "Yesi: Boundaryless"(《也斯:東西》). He received the Certificate of Merit in 2018 to recognize his outstanding performance in teaching. Dr. Siu is also invited as a guest in TVB’s programmes – “Cantoxicating” (《粵講粵㜺鬼》)and “Sidewalk Scientists” (《學是學非》) .

CoP-SLHE is one of the initiatives of an UGC-funded project, “Cross-institutional Capacity Building for Service-Learning in Hong Kong Higher Education Institutions (Project No.: PolyU4/T&L/16-19)” jointly organised by Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, The Education University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Our goal is to facilitate sharing of experiences among SL practitioners and interested staff from all UGC-funded institutions and to promote collective learning and the scholarship of teaching and learning in Service-Learning.
