CoP-SL Workshop Series: Research in Service-Learning

The series contain 3 workshops regarding research in Service-Learning.

Date:     19 Mar 2019

Time:     2:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Venue: TU103

In this workshop, participants will learn about the Service-Learning Quality Assessment Tool (SLQAT), which is a tool that provides a quantitative quality score for service-learning subjects.  The tool focuses on 28 elements that are essential for producing high quality service-learning and provides instructors with a mechanism for evaluating the quality of their service-learning courses.  After being introduced to the SLQAT, participants will apply the instrument to assess the quality of one of their service-learning classes.  Participants should bring to the workshop a copy of their course syllabus as well as other course materials (activities, assignments, partnership agreements, etc.) relevant to the service-learning components of the course.

Date:     21 Mar 2019

Time:     10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Venue: Y304

This workshop provides participants an opportunity to explore the state of research on service-learning, focused on providing a review of the research literature, the strengths and limitations of existing studies, and a look to the future regarding the kinds of studies that need to be conducted to advance the study and practice of service-learning.

Date:     22 Mar 2019

Time:     3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Venue: TU107

The research on service-learning has been criticized for lacking rigor and for not providing sufficient evidence to support proponents’ claims that service-learning produces positive benefits and impacts for students, instructors, and the community. After examining the current limitations of service-learning research, participants in this session will each develop a research question they wish to explore and begin to establish a set of research criteria (design, sample, methods, limitations) based on their question, as a means to establish a high quality service-learning research study.
