This is a three-month illustration project initiated by the students from the from the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) (@ava_hkbu) under the School of Creative Arts (SCA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Collaborated with Hong Kong Shifts, a social impact storytelling platform, the project is to explore and experiment with storytelling and visual reinterpretation of the stories of Hong Kong shift workers, reconstructing stories from editorial articles into illustrations. Through the use of illustration as a research method, the students aim to investigate the relationship and social context between their creative practice and the creation of a series of visual narratives that respond to current social content. This project aims to offer a nuanced and insightful exploration of the lives of Hong Kong shift workers and to stimulate discussion and reflection on their experiences and contributions to society.
About Hong Kong Shifts :
Hong Kong Shifts is a social impact storytelling platform. Our mission is to promote kindness, empathy and inclusiveness in our living and working environments through storytelling. Our community project puts the spotlight on shift workers, individuals helping us around the clock discreetly in the background. Hong Kong Shifts was launched in July 2019. Since then, we have explored all corners of the city to source and share stories of over 100 shift workers - ranging from street cleaners, security guards, sampan drivers, fishermen to bamboo scaffolders, seafarers, taxi drivers and many others. At the core of the project is our strong belief that storytelling is a powerful tool to connect, engage, move, mobilise and inspire - and, ultimately, to build bridges between diverse communities in the city that we call home.
